Bro. Howard Coulson,  Sunday School Director
40+ years of service
Howard Coulson was born and raised in Cowan, TN. He worked at General Shoe Corporation in Cowan his freshman year in high school until volunteering for the US Army Air Corps at the onset of World War II. His military obligations allowed him to volunteer as turret gunner and crew chief on a Martin Marauder B26 Bomber with training at Tampa Bay, Florida. After gunner school he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and deployed to the 9th Air Force in Braintree, England. He flew 70 combat missions over France, Belgium, and Holland in the B26 bomber named “GI V” . For his dedicated efforts to insure victory in Europe he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, eleven Oak Leaf Clusters, Unit Citation, ETO Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, and Good Conduct Medal. His Character Rating on DD Form 214 states, “Excellent”.
He married Louise O. Hannah in 1945 and they had 4 beautiful children-Doyle, Brenda, Benny and Dale. He attended and graduated from Memphis School of Photography and moved back to Cowan opening Coulson Studio.This thriving business continually operated from 1947 until 1987.
He has been a member of Cowan First Baptist Church for 64 years and serves as a Deacon and our Sunday School Director, a job he has held for over 40 years. His other activities include composting 500 pounds of leaves and grass each spring, cutting, splitting and stacking firewood to heat his shop and greenhouse, growing tomatoes for his friends and family, working a full garden, and gathering the mail for most of his neighbors. He is very seldom still and never slothful. He continues to be an inspiration to his children, grand-children and great- grand-children instilling within them the true meaning of character, ethics and fair dealings with all those he meets.
